OCLC Resource Sharing Conference 2018

Simplifying resource delivery request options in library discovery platforms can be a challenging endeavor. Can we remove the jargon and just say what the ILL and document delivery services do? Can we focus on what is being delivered and the format options? Are our systems capable of presenting one button requesting with integrated “smart fulfillment” technologies that route requests to appropriate services behind-the-scenes? If we make these services more prominent and easy to use, how much will this increase the staffing and financial needs within the library? 
At the University of Minnesota Libraries, we’ve been exploring and investigating these questions of how to integrate document delivery into discovery alongside the existing delivery services. Using an iterative process with usability testing throughout, our aim is to make requesting resources seamless for the user, while also identifying and addressing the potential costs and associated risks.
