Libraries are increasingly using resource sharing to deliver journal access. There are few choices to provide access to research materials in a cost-effective way that is simple for users and staff. Libraries are caught between subscriptions or less than ideal article purchasing choices. Resource sharing can offer access options that are convenient yet cost-effective and includes automated purchasing of articles blended with resource sharing. Additionally, the article workflow must be dynamic and configurable so access options and allowable costs depend on the requester, the title, and the time and day. SUNY Poly and other libraries have optimized the article workflow so the best method is applied to requests. A re-envisioned article workflow currently in production that automates copyright clearance completes and fixes of citations, purchases articles, compares prices, and applies local article purchasing and borrowing policies without mediation or delays will be discussed.
